“We need a plan,” a pastor friend recently confided to me. “We’re hiring a missions consultant to help us think through what to do with the fifty missionaries our church supports. We’re all over the map and we really need to focus on a few places where our church can rally around. I used to think that our missions program was successful because we had so many missionaries connected to so many places. Now I see this as our biggest liability. We have no focus. When the chair of our Missions Committee moved away, I stepped into the role. Boy, were my eyes opened. Our default strategy is simply to do whatever we did last year, maybe increase a bit more… that’s probably the same thing we’ve been doing since our church started. We’ve had missions on auto pilot.
