March 2004

We did hygeine classes at a school of 1500 students in Limon and spent time in an orphanage, Oasis de Amor, doing some children’s ministry (but mostly just playing!).  We also visited with people house-to-house as well as in the park of Nacaome.  Please pray for the churches to continue their ministries and touch more Hondurans for Jesus!

Choluteca receives running water for one hour a day & the school had no septic system – just a concrete hole.  It was a challenge to live in such conditions even for a week.  It was definitely a test of  patience, flexibility and humility as we had to step outside our comfort zones and let go of our self-centeredness.

Here is some information from GCM about Choluteca and their work going on there:

After Hurricane Mitch, the Great Commission churches in Honduras partnered together with Samaritan’s Purse and Great Commission Ministries to launch one of the largest reconstruction projects ever done by a religious organization in Central America. 5,300 homes were built in new, safer neighborhoods. Medical teams as well as evangelistic teams developed holistic relief to the hurt and needy.

Choluteca is located in the southern tip of Honduras, and has a dry and hot, desert-like landscape. There are few work or study opportunities, and it could be considered one of the poorest areas in the country. This city relocated their homeless victims of the natural disaster to an area now know as Limon. We built 580 homes. Other organizations built another 1,800 homes in this neighborhood.  Some political and legal challenges slowed down the process of fully developing the area and social problems began almost immediately.

For Limon, the local church started a project called “Enciende una Luz” (Ignite the Light) which basically provides day care for 17 children.  They get a warm, delicious and nutritious meal, tender loving care and biblical teachings. There is one full time employee and a team of volunteers. The facilities are not ideal, but we have seen improvements in the social development of the children, as well as in their health and this has impacted the rest of their families. There is a system in place to help each family improve and develop as well as opportunities to share the Gospel and provide needed discipleship. We are also involved in repairing the local school where many of these children study. There are 850 students, two latrines and hot, dark classrooms with furniture that is in very bad shape.
